Frequently Asked Questions About High-End Premium Headphones

What is the difference between IEMs and over-ear headphones?

There are a couple of unique differences. First, in-ear monitors (IEMs) sit inside the ear canal and seal it off, blocking ambient noise passively. Hence, for IEMs, the intimacy achieved in its sound presentation is unique to this category.

Over-ear headphones cup the entire ear, and its distance to your ears mean a slightly different sound presentation compared to IEMs – they often give you a wider soundstage presentation, and its comfort does show over long sessions. However, that is not to say IEMs can’t have large soundstages – rather, a lot of the differences come down to tuning, engineering, and the sound presentation you are looking for. IEMs win on portability and isolation; over-ears win on scale and comfort over hours of listening. Most serious audiophiles and music lovers end up with both eventually.

Are high-end headphones worth the investment?

If music is more than background sound to you, then yes. Premium headphones reveal layers in your favourite tracks that consumer gear simply skips over: the texture of a vocal, the timing of a drum hit, the way a soundstage opens up around you. The jump from entry-level to mid-tier is usually the most dramatic. After that, the gains, while clearly present, start to be less obvious and much more personal, which is exactly why we’d rather have you come in and listen before deciding.

Do I need a dedicated desktop DAC amp or music player to use premium headphones?

Easy-to-drive IEMs and some closed-back portables can run off a phone or laptop. That said, phones and laptops aren’t built with audio quality as a priority, and it often shows: noise, jitter, and a weak output signal can all hold your IEMs or headphones back from performing at their best.  Higher-impedance over-ears, especially open-back headphone variants, are often designed to need more current and cleaner power than a built-in headphone jack can give them.  In those cases, a dedicated music player or desktop DAC amp makes a real difference. What do I consider when buying premium headphones and earphones?

Start with how and where you’ll use them. If you’re listening at home in a quiet room, open-back headphones with a desktop DAC amp or music player is often the way to go. If you commute or share a space, closed-back models or IEMs with a music player or portable DAC amp would be more appropriate. Then think about your source: a great pair of headphones plugged into a weak source rarely sounds its best. Finally, fit. Comfort is the difference between a one-hour session and an all-evening one.
