Understanding Headphone Types

Two form factors, three different listening experiences.

  • Over-ear headphones: The earcups fully enclose the ears. This is the classic choice, with ample room inside the cups for the kind of comfort that lets you listen for hours. Available in open-back and closed-back designs.
  • On-ear headphones: The earcups that rest on the ear rather than around it. Lighter, more compact, and easier to take with you. A sensible middle ground when full-sized headphones can’t fit in the bag.

A note on open-back versus closed-back:

  • Open-back models: These allow air to move through the cups, so you benefit acoustically from a wider, more natural soundstage. However, they come at the cost of leaking sound in both directions (which means they aren’t the best choice for outdoor listening).
  • Closed-back models: Sealed cups, isolating you from the outside world with a more intimate presentation of sound.

Frequently Asked Questions About Headphones

What is the difference between over-ear and on-ear headphones?

The most overlooked advantage of over-ear headphones is comfort. The earcups sit around your ears rather than on them, making long listening sessions genuinely fatigue-free. The larger enclosure also opens the door to bigger drivers and some truly exceptional sound.

In-ear headphones on the other hand, sit on your ear, which can become uncomfortable over time, and the smaller form factor limits driver size. That said, they win on isolation and portability.

Different tools for different jobs. Most serious listeners end up owning both.

What are your tips for choosing good headphones?

It’s important to start first with your lifestyle and usage. Are you mostly at home? Open-back over-ears make much more sense. Commuting? Then closed-back over-ear or on-ear with isolation suits best. On the move? Perhaps IEMs with or on-ears, paired with premium music players. Then think about what music you listen to and what’s driving them, since the best headphones in the world won’t shine through a weak source.

Are open-back or closed-back headphones better?

Neither is better, as they’re built for different scenarios in mind. Open-backs tend to give you more air, a better soundstage, and a more natural sense of space. The downside is that anyone near you can hear what you’re listening to and vice versa.

Closed-backs isolate you from the world, making them ideal for noisy environments or shared spaces. However, the sealed earcups trap sound pressure, which can make bass sound bloated or muddy, and the closed design makes a convincing soundstage harder to achieve. Getting a closed-back to perform at the level of a comparable open-back often costs more as a result. In the end, many audiophiles and music lovers end up owning both for obvious reasons!

Do I need a DAC amp for premium over-ear headphones?

For most mid-high pairs, yes. Mid to high-end headphones, whether over-ear or on-ear, often run on drivers that require much more to drive (e.g. planar magnetic, electrostatic, or even proprietary dynamic drivers). Clean signals from proper premium music players or desktop DAC amps will help the headphones perform to their maximum potential.

Without a proper music player or desktop DAC amp, you’ll hear sound for sure, but with a lot of noise, jitter, and everything else, all masking your playback. Lower-impedance closed-backs are more forgiving, but a good music player or desktop DAC amp will make them sound noticeably better.

Are any of your over-ear/on-ear headphones noise-cancelling?
