What Are In-Ear Monitors (IEMs)? How Are They Different from Regular In-Ear Earphones?

In-ear monitors, or IEMs, are earphones designed for musical enjoyment in two ways. First, by reproducing the received audio sound wave as perfectly as possible, and secondly, through its own tunings via crossovers and utilizing various types of driver to create a unique sound signature for either reference usage, or the absolute enjoyment of high fidelity music playback. Initially only used by studio engineers – audiophiles quickly took notice, and the IEM earphones category was born.

What separates them from regular in-ear headphones really comes down to every single detail – from its external build chassis, to the driver technology inside the shell, and finally, even the cable attached to them. Most IEMs use one of four driver types:

  • Dynamic driver (DD): the most common type, known for producing natural bass and a full-bodied sound.
  • Balanced armature (BA): small, precise, and built for detail with roots in the hearing aid industry. You’ll often find multiple BA drivers stacked inside a single shell, each handling a different frequency range.
  • Electret Tweeters: used generally to handle the upper treble range, these are among the newest driver types to enter the market.
  • Bone Conductor: another recent introduction generally used for the lower frequencies, Bone Conductor drivers deliver the heart-thumping energy of a live concert performance straight into IEMs.

Why Choose Premium In-Ear Earphones From The Audio People?

The jump from a mass consumer earbud to a pair of premium in-ear earphones is bigger than most people expect. Once you hear how much detail, timbre, and musicality a properly tuned IEM pulls out of a familiar track (the space between instruments, the texture of a vocal, the way a soundstage opens up around your head), it’s hard to ever go back.

A few things separate our range of premium IEMs from the rest:

  • Details you can’t unhear. Instrument separation, imaging, and soundstage that consumer earbuds simply can’t produce.
  • Built for long sessions. Universal shells are shaped for hours of comfortable wear; custom IEMs go a step further with shells moulded to the exact shape of your ears, ensuring perfect seal.
  • They scale with your source. Pair a good IEM with a portable DAC amp or Hi-res music players and you’ll unlock music playback you never thought was possible in such a portable form.
  • Genuine, every time. Every product on our shelves is sourced through official channels and tested by our team before it goes on display.
  • Expert pairing. The extensive knowledge we possess is unique as we have been principal curators of mid to high end portable audio gear for a long time. Few in the industry have experience listening to such a vast range from entry to flagship level like we do. The result is an intuitive understanding of how best to pair across setups spanning IEMs, Hi-res music players, desktop DAC amps, and even cables. We remain industry leaders by a far stretch for good reason.
  • Passionate founders. The Audio People was founded by hobbyists who have walked the audio journey themselves, from entry-level gear to absolute flagships. That ethos, “there is a sound for everyone,” runs through everything we do.

Frequently Asked Questions About Premium In-Ear Earphones

Are all your in-ear headphones and IEMs noise cancelling?

Most of our IEM earphones intentionally use passive noise isolation rather than active noise cancelling (ANC). They rely on a snug fit deep in the ear canal, paired with the right ear tips, to block out ambient sound. For many audiophiles, this is the preferred approach: it doesn’t introduce the slight processing artefacts that ANC can sometimes add to the music. If you specifically need true wireless earphones with ANC, we stock a smaller selection in our wireless headphones category.

What do I look out for when choosing an IEM?

There’s quite a bit to consider, but comfort comes first. No matter how good an IEM sounds, you won’t reach for it if it doesn’t fit well. From there, the music you listen to will shape which IEMs we point you toward, and your source plays a bigger role than most people realise. Cable choice, listening hours, and budget all factor in too. The fastest way to work through all of it? Come by and see us. Before long, you’ll have a shortlist, and your ears will do the rest.

Do I need a portable DAC amp for in-ear monitors?

It is definitely a very important plus. While you can run your IEMs off a phone or laptop directly, it is far from ideal. Minimally, with a portable DAC/amp, your phone or laptop simply passes data to it, and the decoding happens at the DAC amp itself, resulting in a cleaner signal, a lower noise floor, and a much better chance for your IEMs to perform at their full potential. Our portable DAC amps are popular for exactly this reason: they slot easily into a phone-based setup and meaningfully lift the listening experience.
